Dr. Oz Talks About 3 Dosha’s Ayurvedic Body Types – Vata, Pitta, Kapha
Today (January 7, 2013) Dr. Oz spoke about Ayurvedic Medicine and how this ancient holistic practice (originating in India) has really caught on in this country and how it can benefit you. During this segment of today’s show Dr. Oz spoke about the “3 Dosha’s” and how knowing your Dosha type can help to improve your health.
What Are The 3 Dosha’s?
Dr. Oz invited Trupti Gokani on to the show to talk about Dosha’s and how they pertain to our lives. Dr. Gokani said that a dosha is a mind/body type unique to us that can be used to control different aspects of our lives. Dr. Gokani even said that our dosha type can even predict health ailments we may expect in the future. She said that all of us are born with a particular Dosha type and we should try to keep our dosha in balance. Dr. Gokani said that eating an unhealthy diet is one way in which you can throw your dosha out of balance. If you know how to keep your dosha in balance and harmony your health will improve greatly.
Pitta Dosha Type – Pitta’s generally have a medium sized frame and a medium sized build. They are fiery types but are usually warm, smart, and goal oriented people. Pitta’s have skin that glows and a big appetite.
Health problems that Pitta’s face – Trouble staying asleep, irritable, body rashes, reflux, and stress. Pittas often have pain in the temple area.
Pitta health RemediesDr. Gokani suggested to Dr. Oz and the audience that Pitta’s drink tea made with coriander, cumin, and fennel seeds. These spices will soothe your stress, calm your mind, and reduce bloating.
Amla Supplement Recommendation – Dr. Gokani said that the Pitta dosha types need cooling and nourishing to stay in balance and harmony. She suggested Amla Supplements. She said that Amla is cooling to the body with anti inflammatory effects. She also said that amla is an immune system booster. Take 200-500 mg of Amla two times per day.
Pitta tips – Give yourselve a coconut oil head massage! Dr. Gokani said too focus the coconut oil massage on the ears, neck, and top of the head.Kapha Dosha TypeKapha’s are usually people with a large frame. This type has “earth elements” which tends to mean that they are resistant to stress, down to earth, and stable. Kapha’s are usually calmer than the other dosha types.
Health problems associated with Kapha types :
- Low motivation
- Bad circulation
- Prone to allergies
- Gains weight easily
- Slow digestion
- Sinus headaches
Supplement Recommendation for Kapha Type – Holy Basil
The following supplements are what Dr. Trupti Gokani recommended from today’s January 7, 2013 episode :
Holy basil – Take 250-500 MG per day. Holy Basil will help to clear your mind and congestion.
Eucalyptus Aromatherapy – Rub a few drops of Eucalyptus on to your wrists and massage the Eucalyptus into your skin. Now, place one finger on your left nostril and inhale through your right nostril. Breathe in this fashion for one to two minutes.
Dosha Type # 3 – Vata
The third and final dosha type is called Vata. Dr. Gokani said that Vata’s tend to be smaller framed people. She said that Vata’s have a lot of enthusiasm and are excellent communicators. She said that they are artistic and do not like to get stuck into a routine. Vata’s tend to eat erratically at different times of the day.
Health problems associated with Vata body types :
- It’s usually hard to fall asleep at night
- Bloating problems
- Racing mind
- Dry hair
- Dry skin
- Cold hands & feet
Remedy For Vata’s – CCF Tea
So, how do you make CCF tea? You add 1/2 tsp of Cumin seeds, Fennel seeds, and Coriander seeds into a cup of hot water. Mix and allow to steep for several minutes before drinking. You will feel calmer and you will notice reduced bloating and gas.
