While we may not be able to stop the aging of our skin there are steps that we can take to slow down the aging process and improve the appearance of our skin. On today’s July 1, 2013 Dr. Oz episode Brook Alpert (author of The Sugar Detox) appeared on the show to talk about a 4 week sugar detox plan to stop the aging of your skin, reduce eye puffiness, dark circles under the eyes, and dry skin.

4 Week Sugar Detox Plan

First you should ask yourself these three questions :

  1. Do you eat sweets or carbohydrates when you are in a bad mood?
  2. Do you reach for soda pop, add loads of sugar to your coffee, or crave energy drinks to help to get you through the day?
  3. Do you crave sweets in the afternoon?

If any of the above questions seem fitting for you, sugar is likely playing a big role in causing your skin to age more quickly than it needs to.  Brooke Alpert is a nutritionist and explained to Dr. Oz that to slow down the skins aging process you should eliminate all sugars from your diet for the first 3 days of the detox plan.  She said that removing all sugar can be difficult but after those 3 days you will crave sugar less and the foods that you eat will taste sweeter!  Here is the list they gave of foods that should be eliminated during the Sugar Detox :

Foods To Avoid

  • Dairy
  • Fruit
  • Starches
  • Alcohol

Foods you should eat

  • Protein foods
  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Vegetables

Brooke gave the tip of adding spices to your foods for more flavor and so you won’t be missing the sugar that you have eliminated from your diet as much.

The Benefits Of The 4 Week Sugar Detox Plan

Brooke Alpert told Dr. Oz that you will be able to notice a difference in your skin in just 72 hours after beginning the skin detox..  You will notice :

  • Decrease in eye puffiness
  • Your skin won’t be as dry
  • Improvement in dark under eye circles

After the first 3 days of total sugar elimination you can start to reintroduce the foods you avoided back into your diet.

Week 1 – Dr. Oz said that you can reintroduce 3 glasses of red wine during week 1.. You can also add apples, crackers that are high in fiber, and unflavored dairy.  Brooke Alpert said that you will notice that your skin is more supple and you will require less moisturizer to combat dry skin.

Week 2 – Reintroduce berries.  Brooke said that eating 1 apple a day will keep your skin looking great.  Add 1 additional serving of unflavored dairy to your diet.

Week 3 – Add 1 oz of dark chocolate and you can now have up to 4 glasses of red wine per week.  Reintroduce starches like brown rice or quinoa into your diet.

Week 4 – Add 1 more glass of red wine and one more serving of starch.  You can now add more fruits back into your diet.  Dr. Oz said that after 4 weeks of the sugar detox you will notice a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines!  Your eye puffiness will continue to improve and your skin will hold more moisture.  Brooke Alpert added that your food will taste sweeter naturally without the need to add sugar..  You  will also experience less cravings.
