Are French Fries Linked To Cancer?
Today’s Dr. Oz was about food additives that may be harmful to your health. Chemicals are being added to our food that aren’t healthy and in fact banned in other countries all around the world. Today, Dr. Oz exposed the the health scare that is going on underneath the radar and why the FDA isn’t doing more to regulate the chemicals that are being added to our food. During this segment Dr. Oz talks about a cancer causing chemical found in the ever popular “French Fry”.
Acrylamide In French Fries and Starch Foods
Many kinds of french fries, potato chips, crackers, and other starch foods produce a chemical called “Acrylamides” when they are baked or fried. This isn’t a food additive but it is still a chemical that we should all be aware of. Dr. Oz invited Dr. Michael Jacobson on to the show to talk about this chemical that isn’t being regulated in our food supply. Dr. Jacobsen said that Acrylamide is regulated in our drinking water but not in our food. In fact, in some cases levels of Acrylamide are 300 times higher in food than what the EPA allows to be in our drinking water. Acrylamide is a chemical that hasn’t been studied enough to know the full effects of this cancer causing substance but there is enough evidence to raise concerns about the levels of Acrylamide that are found in many foods such as french fries.
Acrylamides In Potato Chips, Cookies, Breads
Potato Chips are another food that contains Acrylamides. Dr. Oz explained that Acrylamides are produced during the baking and frying process. This isn’t a food additive but rather a result of the way our food is being prepared. Here are some of the foods that contain high amounts of Acrylamides :
- Potato chips
- Toasted cereals
How To Reduce Levels of Acrylamides In Food You Prepare
Dr. Oz said that you can reduce the amounts of this cancer causing substance by changing the way you prepare your food. Here is what was suggested :
- Soak potatoes prior to cooking – This lowers the amount of Acrylamides by 38 percent. He said that the longer you allow your potatoes (or other starchy carbs) the lower the levels of Acrylamides.
- Remove bread crusts
- Instead of frying – You can reduce the amount of Acrylamides by boiling, steaming, or microwaving your potatoes instead of baking or frying them.
Unhealthy chemicals will be found in our food regardless of what we do but one suggestion that Dr. Greene made on Dr. Oz was to add anti-cancer foods to your diet like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc..) Try to eat 5 servings of the cancer preventing foods or more each week.
