Dr. Oz Talks With Dr. David Perlmutter About Carbs and Why They May Cause Alzheimer’s Disease

Would you consider changing you diet if you knew the right foods that just may help to prevent Alzheimers disease and which foods you should stay away from?  On today’s show Dr. Oz invited Dr. DAvid Perlmutter on to the show to share why he feels that carbs are one of the main causes of Alzheimers.

Do Carbohydrates Cause Alzheimer’s Disease?

Dr. David Perlmutter (the author of “Grain Brain“) on to the show to talk about carbs and why he feels that they are a “poison” to our brains.  Dr. Perlmutter said that the average American diet has changed significantly over the years with a huge increase in the the amount of carbohydrates that we consume.  Dr. Perlmutter believes that unhealthy carbs are playing a role in the Alzheimers and these should be greatly reduced from our diets.  He also feels that healthy fats should be consumed more to help protect our brains and possibly prevent Alzheimer’s.

Do Carbs Shrink Your Brain?

When someone has Alzheimer’s disease, areas of their brain have shrunk and no longer function the way that it was designed to.  Dr. Perlmutter explained to Dr. Oz that there isn’t any medication out there to prevent this type of brain deterioration. However, Dr. Perlmutter believes that there are ways to protect yourself from brain deterioration.  He feels that carbohydrates may actually cause your brain to shrink and eventually lead to memory loss.

Are All Carbohydrates Bad For Your Brain?

Dr. David Perlmutter believes that they are.  This even includes whole grains and fruits.  He explained that whole grains will cause a spike in your blood sugar in a similar fashion as what a candy bar will.  He said the vegetables are grown under the ground that are high in carbs should be avoid.  The veggies that were mentioned were :

  • Potatoes
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Bananas
  • Grapes
  • Pineapple
  • Beets

Carbohydrates That Are Healthy For Your Brain

Better carb options for your brain (according to Dr. David Perlmutter) are :

  • Spinach
  • Blueberries
  • Whole grain brown rice
  • All vegetables grown above the ground

Fats Can Help To Protect Your Brain

Dr. Perlmutter feels that one of the best Alzheimer’s prevention foods that you can eat are healthy fats.  The fats that were mentioned on today’s Dr. Oz were :

  • Coconut oil
  • Butter
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Avocado’s
  • Cheese
  • Salmon
  • Shrimp

Dr. Permutter said that too many people are depriving our bodies of healthy fats.  He said that the brain has a marvelous way of reversing the damages that may have already been done.  If you introduce healthy fats into your diet now you can help to prevent Alzheimer’s in the future.Carbohydrates Cause Inflammation In The Body

Dr. Oz agrees with Dr. Perlmutter on many aspects about carbs.  For instance, Dr. Oz said that people who suffer from heart disease or have a stroke is often due to inflammation in the body.  Inflammation in the body is caused from eating too many unhealthy carbs.  Dr. Oz feels that reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat may indeed offer protection from deterioration of the brain and Alzheimer’s.
