On August 22, 2013 Dr. Oz did a segment on how you can tell if you have signs and symptoms of a hormonal imbalance by simply looking in the toilet before you flush while you are on your period.  In fact the color of your periods can tell you important information about your health.  Before you flush, find out what you need to look for to see if you notice any signs that your hormones could be out of balance. Also be sure to check out the foods to eat to balance your hormones in 4 weeks.

What Are The Signs & Symptoms Of A Hormonal Imbalance

While menstruation can be an uncomfortable topic to be talking about, Dr. Oz said that your period can give you some vital information about your hormones.  He said that it’s very important to know the signs that can indicate a hormonal imbalance.  Dr. Oz invited Dr. Jessica Shepherd (OBGYN) on to the show to explain the signs to look for and any symptoms that may alert you that you should see a physician.

Colors Of Your Period

Clumpy Period That Has A Dark Saturated Color – If this explains the type of period you have, it could be a sign that you have a high amount of estrogen.  High estrogen levels often result in heavy & clumpy periods.  Other symptoms that you may notice are :

  • clumpy periods
  • headaches
  • migraines
  • breast tenderness
  • acne
  • weight issues

Dr. Shepherd said women who are overweight often have estrogen levels that are too high.  Higher levels could put you at a higher risk for certain cancers.

Light pink – A light pink period that is thinned out could be a sign that you have low estrogen levels.  Please take note if you also experience any of the following symptoms along with periods that are light pink in color :

  • thinning hair
  • low sex drive
  • vaginal dryness
  • hair loss
  • fatigue

Dr. Shepherd explained to Dr. Oz and the audience that women who have low estrogen levels often have erratic periods.  Some of the longer term health risks to low estrogen levels is low bone density (this can cause bone fractures).  If you experience some of the noted symptoms be sure to mention this with your doctor to have your estrogen levels checked.

Vibrant Red Periods – This is the ideal color (the color of cranberry juice). Alisa Vitta explained that a period of this kind is usually a good indicator of a period that starts and ends on time every month.  However, she did say to take notice if you experience PMS symptoms (weight gain, moodiness, bloating).  She said that PMS isn’t actually normal and there’s always still a chance you could have a hormonal imbalance if you experience symptoms such as these during your periods.

Manology : The Secrets Between The Male And Female Brain – Manology is a top selling book that has even surpassed 50 Shades of Gray as the top selling book in volume!  Why is manology so popular?  Many men and women are very interested in finding out how the other gender think. The authors of Manology appeared on Dr. Oz to talk about the difference between the male and female brain.
