Dr. Oz Talks About Cases of Measles, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and a Paralyzing Polio Like Virus Outbreak
Dr. Oz opened up his April 22 show in an alarming fashion. Dr. Oz was alerting his viewers about new cases of Measles, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and a a virus similar to Polio that is paralyzing people (mostly children) all across the United States. These diseases were once thought to be eradicated are making a comeback. Are the vaccinations no longer working? Should we get vaccinated again? Dr. Oz talked about this and more during the episode.
84 Measles Cases in 11 States
In the past 8 weeks cases of Measles has been on the rise. It worries Dr. Oz because Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known in history. For the past 20 years it was thought that Measles was nearly wiped out in the U.S. but now there is once again a reason to be concerned. Dr. Oz said that Measles vaccination is very important for children and adults because if you come in contact with the virus there is a 90% chance that you will get it!
Signs and Symptoms of Measles
Dr. Oz admitted that he didn’t know what to look for because he had never seen a case before and it was thought to be nearly eradicated in the US. Upon this outbreak, Dr. Oz did some research so he would be educated on what all the signs and symptoms are for the early stages of measles.
- Runny nose
- High fever
- A rash that begins behind the ears and will spread all over the body
Dr. Oz said that what worries him the most is that you can’t treat the disease once you get it.. It has to run it’s course and you can only treat the side effects… So what are the dangerous complications and side effects from the Measles?
Possible Complications and Side Effects from the Measles :
- 1/3 of the people who get the Measles will need to be hospitalized
- Measles can lead to blindness, pneumonia, meningitis, deafness, and death.
Dr. Oz said that if you are an adult and unsure if you are fully vaccinated the best way to prevent contracting the Measles virus is to get vaccinated. All children should be vaccinated.
50,000 Cases of Whooping Cough Diagnosed in 2013
With 50,000 people coming down with Whooping Cough (Pertussis) the public should be aware of this disease making a comeback on our society. Here are some frightening facts that were give on todays Dr. Oz :

- Adults are getting Whooping cough as well as children
- Immunization isn’t as potent as other vaccinations

A Virus Similar To Polio Is Paralyzing Children In California
Polio may quite possibly be the most feared disease that this country has ever seen. One of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine is when the polio vaccine was first developed by Jonas Salk.. However, there is a new “Polio-Like” virus that has Dr. Oz and the medical community worried. This is a new disease and doctors are unsure of how to treat it.
Dr. Thornton explained that it’s hard to diagnose in the early stages because it simply starts out as a cold. After just a few days it can lead to permanent paralysis. The medical community is now working diligently to find out the cause of this new disease putting our children at risk.
