Dr. Oz Talks About Milk Sensitivity Symptoms and If Milk May Actually Be Bad For You
You probably have grown up with the impression that milk is very good for you. Well, on today’s (January 31, 2015) episode Dr. Oz spoke to Dr. Mark Hyman who believes that milk may be causing you more harm than good. Dr. Hyman (author of The Ultrasimple Diet) spoke about how milk increases body inflammation which in turn may be raising your risk for certain cancers.
Does Milk Make You Fat?
Dr. Mark Hyman said that many of the “healthy” claims made about milk are simply not true. He said that many people will drink low fat milk instead of the higher fat milk and end up gaining weight. He said that this occurs because it is the sugar that is making us gain weight rather than the fat.
Dr. Hyman said that another misconception that many people believe is that the calcium in milk strengthens bones. He said that the protein in milk overtakes the calcium and it is released by the body. He said that it is the Vitamin D that is strengthening the bones rather than the calcium.
Milk Sensitivity Symptoms
Dr. Mark Hyman explained to Dr. Oz and the audience that milk is not good for your stomach. He said that 3/4 of the people in the world (1/4 in the U.S.) are sensitive to lactose. If you are lactose intolerant your stomach doesn’t absorb all of the sugar that is in the milk. You will feel bloated and may have intestinal problems like diarrhea. Milk also contains a protein called Casein. This protein can cause digestive health ailments like Leaky Gut.

Does Milk Increase Your Risk For Cancer?
Dr. Oz was skeptical about this claim that milk can increase your risk for cancer. Dr. Mark Hyman said that humans weren’t meant to drink milk from a cow. Cows milk is designed to grow baby calfs into cows. He said that cows milk contains hormones that can make cancer cells grow. He said that this is especially true for prostate and ovarian cancers.Non Dairy Alternatives To MilkDr. Oz said that while there are better alternatives to milk, he doesn’t believe that milk is bad for you if you aren’t experiencing any lactose intolerant symptoms. Dr. Oz said that he drinks 2 percent milk and will continue to do so. However, he doesn’t believe that it makes sense to be drinking skim milk. Here are some healthy alternatives that Dr. Oz suggested at the end of the show segment :
- Almond milk
- Unsweetened coconut milk
- Goat milk
