Dr. Oz Talks About Parasite Infections & Symptoms To Look For

Today Dr. Oz opened the show to talk about an increasing problem in the United States.  Parasite infections are on the increase and they may be the true culprits behind flu like symptoms that may have been affecting you.  To help him with this segment Dr. Oz invited Dr. Florian Reyda on to the show to talk about parasite infections and why we should be concerned.  Dr. Reyda said that parasites are becoming a problem in the US because the World has gotten to be a smaller place.  People are able to travel all over the globe much more easily and they are bringing back infections from tropical areas around the world that harbor parasites that were at one time a rarity in the United States.  Also be sure to check out the followup segment on how to prevent and rid your body of parasites.

How Are Parasites Being Spread

When people travel they are often infected with parasites from the vegetables they eat and the water that they drink.  Once a person is infected with parasites they can spread them to people rather easily.  Dr. Reyda also said that we import an increasing amount of fruits and veggies from tropical areas that are contaminated with parasites.

Tick Bites : What Are The Symptoms Of Toxocariasis Infections?

Dr. Oz invited Dr. Margaret Williamson (infectious disease specialist) on to the show to talk about how parasitic diseases are spread.   She said that the symptoms that people will notice are quite similar to flu like symptoms.  She said that doctors first assume that you have the flu, but many times the patient is actually suffering from a parasite.  Toxocariasis  is usually spread from dogs to people.  The parasite is spread through dog excrement and it infects the surrounding areas.  Children often pick up this parasite from playing in these areas.  Some symptoms of Toxocariasis include :

  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Wheezing

Dr. Williamson said that anyone who suffers from a combination of these symptoms should see a doctor.  Make sure that you ask to have a parasite test performed because many doctors overlook this potential cause of your symptoms.Tick Bites : Symptoms of Babesiosis InfectionDr. Florian Reyda then talked about another common parasite that affects so many people is called “Babesia”.   She said that this type of infection is cause by tick bites and it spreads throughout your body.  It is usually spread by those tiny “seed” ticks that can be difficult to see. Here are some symptoms that Dr. Oz posted on his show :

  • Fever
  • Sweats
  • Chills
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea

Dr. Williamson explained to Dr. Oz that the symptoms that are shown above usually appear within a couple of weeks after you are bitten by an infected tick.  However, symptoms can take as long as 3 munths to appear.  She said that you can take a blood test to find out if you have been infected with the Babesia parasite.

Bird Schistosomes : What Is Swimmers Itch And What Are The Symptoms
