Dr. Oz Talks About The Health Risks Associated With Pesticides on GMO Crops That End Up In The Grocery Store

Today Dr. Oz did a show talking about the explosion of pesticides being used on GMO crops that many of us are feeding our families.  To help him with this segment Dr. Oz invited Elisabeth Leamy on to the show (investigative reporter) to get the inside scoop on the alarming amount of pesticides that are being used in our food supply.  Dr. Oz talks about the health risks associated with pesticide use and what we can do to limit our exposure to pesticides

Dr. Oz is very concerned about the chemical and pesticide usage in the crops and food products that are making it’s way into our food supply.  While you may not notice the trace amounts that you are consuming, they can build up over time.  The chemicals can build up in your system and potentially be causing you and/or your family in the future.

GMO’s Used In Approximately 80 Percent of All Processed Foods

GMO’s stand for “Genetically Modified Organisms”.  You are likely eating GMO’s and don’t even know it.  In fact, GMO’s are used in about 80 percent of processed foods.  Dr. Michael Hansen (of Consumer Reports) stated on the show that since the introduction of GMO’s in our food the use of pesticides has increased dramatically. So, why had there been such an increase in the use of pesticides?  Dr. Hansen said that the weeds in the fields build up a resistance to the pesticides over time.  This leads to a heavier spray of pesticides on “engineered” GMO crops.

The Pesticide Explosion

Dr. Oz said that 1.5 million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on GMO crops back in 1999. In 2012, the amount of pesticide use grew to a shocking 90 million pounds!

How Do You Avoid Pesticides In Your Food?

Elisabeth Leamy said the best thing you can do is to switch to organic foods.  She said that conventional foods that so many people are buying from grocery stores contain higher amounts of pesticides.  Elisabeth Leamy said that you can lower your health risks caused by pesticides simply by switching to organic foods.

Pesticide Exposure Concerns and Health Risks

Dr. Oz is concerned about the long term health risks that pesticides may be having on your health.  He is definitely not alone in sharing this concern.  Dr. Oz said that 75 percent of consumers also share this concern.  So, what can we do about this problem that isn’t going to go away any time soon?

Health Risks From Pesticides

  • There aren’t any limits on the number of pesticides that can be combined on any particular food.  Dr. Oz said that we just don’t know how these pesticides are interacting with eachother, not to mention how these chemicals may be interacting in our bodies!
  • Pesticides linked to ADHD, learning disabilities, birth defects, miscarriage, and certain forms of cancer.
  • Pesticides  may contribute to food allergies and possibly be causing intestinal damage.

High Risk Groups For Health Problems from Pesticide Exposure

  • Children
  • Pregnant women
  • Elderly
