Dr. Oz Talks To The Shape Up Sisters and Shares a Pumpkin Oatmeal, Muffin Tin Frittatas, Banana Parfait and Breakfast BLT Recipe

Your morning breakfast should be giving you a boost of energy rather than weighing you down and making you feel sluggish before your day even begins.  Dr. Oz invited Linda Fondren, author of The Shape Up Sisters on to the show to share her story about how they helped their home town in Mississippi lose 15,000 pounds.  Listed below are the recipes that were shared along with weight loss tips from The Shape Up Sisters book.

Pumpkin Oatmeal Recipe

You probably have heard the saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”  Dr. Oz truly believes that and listed below are three energy boosting recipes that were shared on today’s April 18, 2014 episode :

  1. Pumpkin Oatmeal – Stir 1 cup of oatmeal (cooked) with 1/4 cup of canned pumpkin..  Add some cinnamon for flavor
  2. Muffin Tin Frittatas – Mix up a few eggs and add chopped up veggies.  Examples that they chose were spinach and peppers.  After you have mixed the eggs and peppers add them to 12 muffin cups and bake for 8 minutes.
  3. Breakfast BLT-A – Add canadian bacon, an avocado, tomato and lettuse to a whole grain english muffin for a quick and easy on the go breakfast sandwich.

The Shape Up Sisters Help Their Town Lose 15,000 Pounds

Dr. Oz spoke with the author of Shape Up Sisters, Linda Fondren about what inspired her to write her book.  Linda said that she learned that her home state of Mississippi is the most obese state in the country so she decided to do something about it.  Linda opened up an all-women gym and offered her clientele free fitness classes at no charge.  She also gave out nutritional advice to anyone who wanted some.  This really caught on in her city and 15,000 pounds of weight loss speaks for itself!  It did take some sacrifice for those who participated in the weight loss plan.  They had to give up all of their fried foods, macaroni and cheese, sweet tea, etc…

So what would a typical plate consist of on the Shape Up Sisters plan?

    1/2 of the plate would consist of fruits and vegetables, 1/4 grains, and 1/4 protein

Banana Parfait and Banana Sushi Recipe

Banana Sushi Recipe – Spread some peanut butter on to a corn tortilla.  Then add banana, some honey, a few crushed cashews and some cinnamon.

Banana-rama Parfait Recipe – Slice up some bananas, raspberries, vanilla yogurt with a few dark chocolate chips sprinkled on top.  Serve the parfait in a wine glass for a delicious, nutritious, and healthy treat.
