Does Lack of Sleep Increase Heart Disease Risk? Does High Blood Pressure Age You Faster?

Have you ever wondered what your real age is?  Of course you can easily look at the calendar to find out exactly how many years and day you have been living but is that how old your body really is?  Dr. Oz invited Dr. michael Roizen on to the show to talk about how you can determine what your “Real Age” is.  You may find that you are actually older (or hopefully younger) than what that calendar might say.  Dr. Roizen explained how your “Real Age” is based on many factors like lifestyle, eating habits, genetics, and more.  By following some of the tips given on today’s (April 16, 2013) Dr. Oz episode you can age gracefully so you can be around to enjoy your family for as many years as humanly possible.

Take The Real Age Test

Dr. Keith Roach (who created the RealAge test) said that there are certain factors that you can’t control when it comes to aging, like your genetics.  However, genetics only plays a partial role on how you age.  He said that there are many things that you can do to age gracefully and not age faster than you need to.

Dr. Oz didn’t give the questions for the entire test.  You can take the full real age test on his official website to find out how old you really are.  Here are the questions that they asked on the show and are similar to other questions that are asked on the test :

  • How tall are you?
  • How much do you weigh?
  • What are your waist measurements?

Questions like these, according to Dr. Roizen, can be valuable indicators that can tell you important information about your health that can greatly influence your lifespan.

Is Lack Of Sleep Associated With An Increased Risk For Heart Disease?

Dr. Oz said that lack of sleep plays a vital role in your health and is often overlooked.  He said that lack of sleep definitely plays a roll in how fast (or slow) you age.  He asked these questions during this segment on today’s show :

  • On an average day, how many hours of sleep do you get?
  • How frequently do you take prescription or otc meds to help you sleep at night?

Dr. Keith Roach said that it is unclear why sleep plays such an important role in aging but a lack of sleep has been associated with heart disease and a poorly functioning immune system.  Dr. Oz said that lack of sleep can also cause you to gain weight.

Does High Blood Pressure Cause You To Age Faster?

If you have high blood pressure can you expect to age faster?  Dr. Roizen said that your blood pressure numbers are very important and can have a significant impact on how fast you age.  Your cholesterol numbers are important as well.  If your blood pressure is good you can add 8 years to your lifespan.  Here are the questions that were asked on today’s Dr. Oz :

    • Do you know what your blood pressure is?
    • Are you aware of what your total cholesterol is?

Do you know your HDL level?
