Dr. Oz Low Sodium Sloppy Joe Recipes (Jalapeno, Tabasco, and Tomato)

Sloppy Joes are as popular as ever, especially as the temperatures begin to fall.  On today’s (October 1, 2013) show Dr. Oz set out to prove that you don’t need to load up your sloppy joe recipe with salt for it to taste good.  He invited some guests on to the show and here are the Sloppy Joe recipes that were shared during today’s show :

Jalapeno Sloppy Joe Recipe

Do you like spicy food?  Here is the sloppy Joe recipe that may satisfy your spicy cravings in a much healthier fashion.

Ingredients you will need :

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1/4 cup of chopped onions
  • 1 tablespoon of Vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup of green pepper (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard
  • 3 teaspoons of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 3/4 cup of low sodium vegetable stock
  • 1 tablespoon of agave nectar
  • 1/3 diced Jalapeno pepper (choose the seeded jalapeno peppers if possible)
  • 3/4 cup of vegetable stock (be sure to choose the low sodium version)
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Sloppy Joe buns

Preparation directions :

  1. Use a skillet to brown  1 lb of ground beef
  2. Add in onion, green pepper, jalapeno, and tomato paste
  3. Add mustard, brown sugar, low sodium veggie stock, and garlic powder.  Stir the ingredients thoroughly
  4. Lower heat and simmer
  5. Add in the agave nectar

Five In Ways In Which You Can Cut Down On Your Salt Intake

Looking for ways in which to lower your sodium consumption.  Dr. Oz invited guest G. Garvin (from the cooking channel) on to the show to share some great ideas.  Here are some healthy alternatives you can add to recipes instead of salt :

    • Chicken broth (low sodium)
    • Tomato paste
    • Garlic
    • Infused oils
    • Spices

Tabasco and Tomato Sloppy Joe Recipes

Here are the ingredients that you will need :

  • 2 cloves of garlic (chopped into pieces)
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • Red pepper (chopped)
  • Green pepper (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup of molasses
  • 1 teaspoon of tabasco sauce
  • 1/4 of chicken broth (low sodium
  • 2 pounds of ground beef
  • 8 ounces of canned tomatoes
  • Pepper
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste (low sodium)
  • 4 Sloppy Joe buns

Preparation directions (G. Garvin’s recipe)

  1. Heat up 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet
  2. Add the bell peppers and garlic and saute (approximately 3 minutes)
  3. Add some pepper to season
  4. Add ground beef to the bell peppers and garlic mixture.  Cook the ground beef fully while stirring for 8 minutes
  5. Add the tomato paste, tomatoes, chicken broth, and hot sauce
  6. Stir in molasses
  7. Simmer for 10 minutes until the sloppy joe mixture has thickened
  8. Add to hamburger buns and serve
