Dr. Oz Talks To Sofia Vergara About Thyroid Cancer As Well As Symptoms & Risk Factors For A Sluggish Thyroid

Sofia Vergara, the star actress of the hit television show Modern Family sat down for an interview with Dr. Oz to talk about the health problems she has had to endure and overcome.  Sofia talks with Dr. Oz about how she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the young age of 28.  Now, at 40 Sofia Vergara is as beautiful and healthy as ever.  Dr. Oz and Sofia talk about sluggish thyroid symptoms and risk factors that we all should be aware of.

Is Sofia Vergara Planning To Get Pregnant At Age 40?

Quite possible.  Sofia revealed to Dr. Oz that she is engaged to be married and the couple have been considering having a child.  While they decide what the future may bring they decided to have some of her eggs frozen in case they do decide to have a baby.

Sofia Vergara’s Battle With Thyroid Cancer

Sofia Vergara was originally diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was only 28 years old.  She ultimately had to have her entire thyroid removed.  Dr. Oz explained to the viewers that after you have your thyroid removed you become hypothyroid.  What this means is that without a thyroid your body is missing vital hormones that control your metabolism.  Since Sofia has had to have her thyroid removed she has to take medication to control her condition and remain diligent when it comes to maintaining her health.  She recommended that everyone should be tested to see if they have a sluggish thyroid.  She said that it is a simple blood test that could save your life.

Risk Factors For Hypothyroidism

The thyroid glad is quite small and is located in the neck. Despite it’s small size it is responsible for many functions all throughout the body. Dr. Jordan Geller (Sofia’s personal physician) said that it is important that we pay attention to signals that our body’s could be sending us when it pertains to our health.  Dr. Geller explained to Dr. Oz and the audience that if you have a family member with low thyroid function it is important for you to get tested as well because genetically you run a higher risk of having a sluggish thyroid as well.

Perform A Thyroid Neck Test At Home

Dr. Jordan Geller said that it is easy to take a thyroid neck test in the comfort of your own home.  All you have to do is place your fingers on your collar bone at the base of your throat and then swallow.  If you can feel something moving up and down when you swallow it could be an indicator that you have a problem with your thyroid.  If you think that you may have a thyroid problem you should go and see your physician as soon as possible.

What Are Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism?

Dr. Oz & Dr. Geller talked about the symptoms for hypothyroidism and here are the symptoms that you should be aware of :

  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Unexpected weight gain
  • Brittle nails
  • Dry hair
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation

Dr. Oz said that if you have 3 or more of these symptoms you should go see a doctor to have your thyroid tested.
