Dr. Oz and Scott Faber Talk About How To Spot GMO Foods on Labels
Today (February 13, 2015) Dr. Oz invited Scott Faber from EWG (Environmental Working Group) on to the show to talk about how to tell if you are eating GMO foods and how to spot GMO foods on the labels at the Grocery store. The food industry would like GMO foods to be listed as “natural” but that doesn’t make sense. Dr. Oz and Scott Faber both believe that foods that are made in a lab should NOT be able to be listed as natural because they contain genetically modified ingredients.
The Food Industries Fight Against Mandatory Labeling of GMO Foods
Many companies are against the mandatory labeling of GMO foods because they don’t want you to know what is in the food that they are selling to you (regardless that it may be putting your family at risk).
The Food Industry Says That Mandatory GMO Labeling Will Increase The Price Of Food
One argument that made is that the price of food will increase. They said that the price increase could be as much as $1,600 per year for a family of four. Scott Faber disagrees with this assumption. He said that adding a few words to a label shouldn’t cause an increase like the Food Industries are warning us about. Dr. Oz and Scott both feel that it is our right as citizens to know what is in our food and it is our right to decide how we wish to feed our families.
How To Avoid GMO Foods
According to Scott Faber, the best way to avoid GMOs is to buy organic. He said that is about your only option to guarantee that GMO’s aren’t getting into your food. The next best thing you can do is to look for foods that are labeled as “NON-GMO”. The Non-Gmo seal is now on ove 12,000 products in our grocery food stores! Here are some other tips that were give to help you avoid GMOs :
- Avoid foods that contain corn or derivatives from corn
- Avoid squash
- Avoid papaya
- Avoid soy or foods that contain derivatives of soy
Read The Bar Code Labels To Spot Organic Foods!
It is very easy to tell which produce foods are grown organically. Dr. Oz said to look for either a 4 or 5 digit number. The 5 digit #’s that begin with 9 are grown organically. If the number doesn’t begin with a 9 it means that they grown conventially and it is likely that they contain GMO’s and/or pesticides. In conclusion Dr. Oz feels that there should be mandatory labeling for all GMO foods. He feels that is our right to choose which foods that we buy for ourselves and our family.
