Natasha said that you should have 30 grams of protein to help fire up your protein in the morning. Dr. Oz asked, why so much focus on protein? Dr. Natasha Turner said protein is a building block of thyroid hormone. So, you need protein consistently to build the hormones that you need to control your metabolism. Natasha suggests getting your protein through a shake or smoothie drink within an hour of waking up. Here is her thyroid smoothie or shake recipe that she shared on today’s Dr. Oz :
Fruitless Smoothie / Shake Recipe for Your Thryoid Ingredients :
- 4 choices of protein – Whey, pea, hemp, Greek yogurt.
- Organic almond butter
- Unsweetened chocolate almond milk
- Cacao nibs
- Sea salt
- Fiber supplement
Watercress Smoothie Recipe – Remedy for Sluggish Thyroid
Watercress is a wonderful source of thyroid, which your thyroid needs to be healthy. Many people with thyroid problems are iodine deficient. Natasha loves this watercress breakfast smoothie that is full of ingredients that support healthy thyroid function.
- 1 small bunch of watercress
- 3/4 cup coconut milk
- 1/4 tsp turmeric (or more, to desired taste)
- 2 teaspoons ground chia seeds
1. Blend all ingredients shown above until smooth.
2. Add water in slowly until desired consistency is reached.
Metabolic Syndrome Quiz
Another reason for unexplained weight gain could be from metabolic syndrome. It could be going on in your body right now and you don’t even know about it. Dr. Oz invited Mike Berland (author) on to the show to talk about metabolic syndrome and how it affects 47 million people in America.
Mike Berland said that he lost 70 pounds after he found out that he had metabolic syndrome. He said that he was living a healthy lifestyle. He was eating right and exercising consistently but he was still gaining wait and he could never figure out why. He said that he was gaining a couple pounds a year and didn’t worry about it in his 20’s. In his 30’s he was starting to get a little “chunky”.. By the time he was 40 he had gained 70 lbs. He was finally diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. He said that he was gaining most of his weight around his belly. His cholesterol was rising and his doctor wanted to put him on cholesterol medications. His blood sugar was going up as well.
Dr. Oz mentioned that we believe that 47 million people have metabolic syndrome. Mike said that in all due respect, he thinks that those numbers are low. He thinks that 1 out of 3 people have metabolic syndrome! 1 out of 3! Mike said that his body was a fat storing machine. He had to learn to eat the foods that his body could burn and turn his body into a fat BURNING machine instead. Mike Berland actually wrote a book called Fat Burning Machine that outlines all the foods that people with metabolic syndrome should be eating. It lists foods that that burn fat and foods that will cause your body to store fat. Mike said that he said that he had to strictly stay in the fat burning column. If he strayed and ate foods on the fat storing list he would gain weight.
