Shaun Kennedy told Dr. Oz that another counterfeit food that we are often being duped by is 100% lemon juice. He said that frequently water and/or sugar is being added to the lemon juice. He told Dr. Oz that companies do this because it saves the company money to dilute the lemon juice down with water. While it is hard to tell when lemon juice is being watered down the consumer is still paying for a product that they aren’t receiving as advertised. There are some things you can do to avoid purchasing fake lemon juice.
Test Your Lemon Juice With Baking Soda
Not sure if your favorite brand of 100% lemon juice is delivering a genuine product? Take the baking soda lemon juice test to find quickly find out! Dr. Oz said that when you add baking soda to lemon juice it causes a chemical reaction and it will start bubbling up. If you do not have 100 percent lemon juice the chemical reaction won’t be strong enough to cause it to bubble up. Here is what you need to do :
- Add baking soda to water (in a glass)
- Allow the baking soda to settle
- Pour in lemon juice
- If there is no reaction your lemon juice is not 100 percent
- If the chemical reaction causes it to bubble and foam up to the point of overflowing you do have genuine 100% lemon juice.

Dr. Oz said that the best way that we can protect ourselves as consumer’s from getting watered down lemon juice is to follow these simple tips :
- Buy real lemons
- The juice from freshly squeezed lemons can last for months.
- Freeze the freshly squeezed lemon juice into ice cube trays.
