Dr. Oz Talks About A Dangerous New Pain Medication (Zohydro) That Can Cause Addiction With Potential Overdose Risk
Dr. Oz opened today’s show with a medical alert about a new pain medication that has him concerned. The pain med is called Zohydro and is said to be 5x stronger than any other pain medication with 50 mg of hydrocodone. With so many Americans already suffering from addiction to medication, why would the FDA approve this new opioid based medication that is so powerful?
Dr. Oz invited Dr. Sanjay Gupta on to the show to talk about the potential dangers of Zohydro. Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Dr. Oz are very concerned because this powerful pain med is 5 tiimes stronger than Lortab and Vicodin.
FDA Approved Zohydro
Dr. Gupta said that the FDA approved Zohydro partially in part due to the pressure from medical providers to supply more options for patients. There is a need for patients who truly need a pain medication this powerful, but it also opens up the door to potential abuse and overdosing risk. What worries Dr. Sanjay Gupta is the fact that Americans consume 80 percent of the worlds pain meds.
Zohydro Addiction and Overdose Risk
Dr. Oz said that because Zohydro can be crushed down into a powder, it can also be used in ways that are not intended. He is concerned that Zohydro will become a street drug that can be snorted or used in other harmful ways. Many people in the medical community raise the concern about Zohydro turning into a gateway drug to heroin. 4 out of 5 heroin users begin their addiction with pain medications.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta believes that doctors are partially to blame for the drug abuse in America because they don’t explore alternative options before prescribing these powerful pain meds. Dr. Gupta said that overdose risk is high for patients who haven’t taken these types of medications before. Dr. Oz understands the need for these type of pain medications but the high risk of addiction to Zohydro has him concerned.
